“Tenerife is much more than sun and beach” Marta hiking in Tenerife

Today our colleague Marta writes about her experiences on her route through the stunning island of Tenerife.

After a full week of hiking in Tenerife, I can say that this wonderful island is much more than sun and beach.

I felt great escaping from the cold and wet Irish winter for a few days and wearing again my summer clothes.

Although you also have to be prepared for a bit of cold and wind when hiking in Tenerife. This definitely applies if you visit Tenerife and go to Teide.

My advice is that you cannot miss the Teide experience!

Hiking in Tenerife: El Teide

El Teide is a must-visit if you are in Tenerife for a few days. The landscape is varied and impressive.

Sometimes you feel that you are walking on the moon surrounded by pumice stone.

Suddenly, the landscape changes and you are walking along a mountain path surrounded by bushes and cactus.

The landscape keeps changing… For a moment I thought I was hiking the Grand Canyon in the US!

I would suggest you ask for permission (in advance) to climb the peak.  Otherwise, you will have two options: get up early and pass the checkpoint before they open or climb the peak with a guided tour.

“The landscape is breathtaking and the views spectacular. Words are not enough. You have to experience it yourself, put on warm clothes, good shoes and enjoy the visit.”

We spent the night at the hotel “El Parador” located in the Teide Natural Park.

The hotel was cosy, the restaurant was really good and the location was absolutely great, with views to the surroundings of the Teide.

Without a doubt, my 48 hours in the Teide were the best of my week on the island.

The gastronomy in Tenerife also requires a special mention, the Canarian food is sensational, go to a guachinche and let yourself be seduced by the exquisite Canarian wines, red, dry white, fruity white … sensational all of them!

In short, a week gives to do everything in Tenerife, enjoy the sun and the beach, but also the mountain trails, the volcanic landscapes, the wrinkled potatoes with mojo and a good glass of Tajinaste wine, my new Favorite fruity white wine.

I’m already looking forward to next winter to prepare another getaway, to the beautiful Canary Islands!
