Travel Tips What to Bring
What should I pack for my walking holiday in the Canary Islands? This is question we get asked a lot at CanariaWays.com. To make sure that you are prepared and bring the right clothes on your walking tour we have put together this essential packing guide:
SHOES
Your shoes are the most important item on your gear list, make sure you get good walking shoes with good grip. You won’t need big hiking boots as they’ll probably be too warm for them. Make sure they are well worn and comfortable before you go, to avoid blisters. A common mistake is purchasing new footwear and taking it to a long walk before ‘breaking them in’. Please note that carrying a clean pair of socks (merino wool/cotton looped variety) each day can also make a huge difference.
GEAR
There is nothing worse than bringing the wrong gear on a trip. Always check the weather online before departure and consider the type of route you are taking before you go. This can determine the type of clothing/footwear you will need: layers are always a good idea if weather is changeable.
Make sure you take swimming gear to enjoy the swimming pool or the sea in the evenings.
PASSPORT
Make a copy or scan your passport and other important documents and ssave them in your Google Drive, Dropbox or simply email them to yourself to keep these files available online. This way you will be able to access them from anywhere in the world at any time if you need them. Make sure you check your passport is still valid; if not, we recommend you request a renewal as soon as possible.
PHONES
If you are travelling from outside Europe, roaming charges for mobile phones can be expensive. If you intend to leave your phone at home, you can always purchase prepaid cards and use the payphone to ring home (or our 24/7 support number).
Alternatively, you can use WIFI in your accommodation to send emails and contact your friends and family. If your mobile device is unlocked, you might be able to purchase a local SIM card to make calls while in the country.
BOOKS
Remember, when booking with CanariaWays.com your luggage will be transferred from hotel to hotel (up to 20kg) so you can bring your reading books but it is always a good idea to keep heavy items to a minimum when travelling.
DAY BACKPACK
You will only need a small day backpack for your daily walks where you can carry water, snacks and other essentials such as your mobile phone, cap, wallet, etc…
MEDICINES
Although there are many pharmacies in the islands, it might be a better option to obtain additional supplies before you leave, particularly if you require specific medication. Regular painkillers like paracetamol or aspirine can be easily obtained in the towns.
