Experience Travel Tips
The CanariaWays.com team brings you easy to follow travel tips and advice to help you plan your next walking holiday in the Canary Islands, so you can make the most of your trip!
When to Go
With balmy temperatures all year around and a sub tropical climate, the Canary Islands are ideal for walking and hiking all year around.
They are perfect for walking trips in the winter months if you are looking to escape the cold. Winter, Spring and Autumn are our favourite seasons for walking in the Canary Islands.
Higher altitudes in the islands, particularly Gran Canaria and Tenerife, will be cooler. Be prepared for sunshine but also for the occassional foggy weather.
What to Bring
We generally suggest uploading a copy of your passport to the ‘cloud’ such as Google Drive, Dropbox or just emailing it to yourself. This is of great help if you happen to lose it while hiking, as you can easily access the copy to process your new one. Moreover, check that your passport is still valid, if not, we recommend that you send it away as the processing time can be long.
Some people find roaming charges for mobile phones are really expensive, therefore; if you intend to leave you phone home, you can always purchase prepaid cards . Many accommodations and restaurants will have WIFI available.
If you are booking with CanariaWays.com, your luggage will be transferred from hotel to hotel so take your reading materials for the evenings.
You will find pharmacies in all the main towns and cities however if you require specific medication we recommend taking supplies with you. If you are looking for common painkillers such as aspirin, paracetamol or iboprufen, they can be easily obtained in the towns.
There is nothing worse than to bring the wrong gear on a walking or hiking trip. Always check the weather online and the type of route you are taking, before you go as this can determine what you will need. For instance if you are walking a relatively easy trail during the summer there is no need to bring heavy walking/hiking boots, this will only slow you down. In this case we suggest you bring a good pair of trail shoes. If you are walking challenging trails, having the right gear, hiking shoes with proper grip, etc… is simply essential.
Remember your shoes are the most important part of the gear so try them before you go. Please note that change of clean socks (wool/cotton looped variety) each day can make a huge difference.
We take a particular pride of doing practical and useful holiday packs for your trip along our fantastic hiking trails around the world. By post: luggage tags for the group to be attached to your luggage during the trip (and guidebook when/if necessary).
Our walking notes and practical information reflect the route as accurately as possible and are updated by the team as often as possible.
