Canary Islands Stargazing: Our Top 3 Locations

The Canary Islands, besides being a perfect destination for hiking, are considered one of the best places for stargazing in the world.

Canary Islands stargazing is considered one of the top activities to do on the Canary Islands and it is something we always recommend to customers.

The clear night skies are protected by the Law of Astronomical Quality of the Observatories of the IAC (Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands).

There is very low light pollution of the skies, which allows observation of the milky way, in all its glory.

Our 3 favourite spots for Canary Islands Stargazing

On any of the Canary Islands, you can see constellations, planets and shooting stars. So think about your wishes while we show you some of our favourite spots for stargazing!

1. Constellations of the Mirador de Masca

Located in Santiago del Teide, about a thousand meters above sea level, the Mirador de Masca offers the best spot for stargazing.

During the autumn months, you will be able to locate Pisces, Aquarius and Capricorn zodiac constellations.

You will also a star twenty-five light-years away!

Our Volcanic Landscapes of Tenerife Hiking Holiday is a great way of including stargazing from the town of Santiago del Teide.

2. A Parador with “stellar” views

Within the Teide National Park in Tenerife, you will find “Las Cañadas del Teide” Parador,  the idyllic place for stargazing. In addition, they offer a tour where they explain in detail the different planets that can be seen from that point, as well as constellations such as the Plough (Ursa Major).

This area is recognized as “Starlight Tourist Destination” and the visitor can easily access the road.

If you decide to go hiking in Tenerife in August, we suggest you witness the rain of perseids (also known as “the tears of San Lorenzo”), a meteor shower that occurs between August 11th and 13th.

Now, turn your gaze to the northeast to contemplate Vega, the main star of the constellation Lira. This is definitely an event worth seeing.

3. Stargazing in Chipude, La Gomera

We have first-hand experience of Stargazing in La Gomera, which could easily be the best view of the stars in our opinion.

Gazing upwards on a cloudless night will guarantee you an unobstructed view of the Milky Way.

You will also be able to identify and spot individual stars using many Night sky apps that are available. Just download the app and point your phone at the night sky.
